Bringing down the cost of fuel cells

Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have identified a catalyst that provides the same level of efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the currently used platinum catalyst, but at 5% of the cost.

Scientists turns carbon dioxide into fuels

Ask Andrew Bocarsly about the innovation behind Liquid Light, a New Jersey startup company that turns carbon dioxide into fuels and industrial chemicals, and the Princeton University chemistry professor smiles ruefully. “The project goes back to the early ’90s,” he said. “But nobody cared about carbon dioxide at that time.”

New way to split water at low temperatures

Providing a possible new route to hydrogen-gas production, researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have devised a series of chemical reactions that allows them, for the first time, to split water in a nontoxic, noncorrosive way, at relatively low temperatures.

New solid oxide fuel cell system that achieves up to 57 percent efficiency

Individual homes and entire neighborhoods could be powered with a new, small-scale solid oxide fuel cell system that achieves up to 57 percent efficiency, significantly higher than the 30 to 50 percent efficiencies previously reported for other solid oxide fuel cell systems of its size, according to a study published in this month’s issue of […]

Mozambique has a world’s first biofuel plant

A biofuel plant designed to produce sustainable cooking fuels was opened in Dondo, Mozambique as the world’s first. The biofuel plant called CleanStar Mozambique (CSM) is a cornerstone of a multi tiered venture which will buy cassava from local farmers and refine it into ethanol. Then the ethanol will be distributed as cooking fuel in […]
