The 12 watt EnduraLED Light Bulb created by Philips offers many advantages over other lighting techniques in use today. In comparison with incandescent bulbs the light runs on significantly less electricity, and the bulb will last 25 times as long.
The bulb uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) to light it. This differs with the most commonly used energy saving bulb the CFL (Compact Florescent Light/lamp).
The LED has many advantages over CFL bulbs. The life span of a LED bulb is longer than that of a CFL, as most CFLs last around 8 to 15 times the length of an incandescent bulb. CFLs cause problems when it comes to disposing of them; this is due to them containing mercury (though this is a trace amount). Mercury as it is a toxic metal needs to be treated carefully when it comes to disposing of it, to avoid it contaminating the ecosystem.
This LED bulb offers the same brightness (if not a little brighter) than a CFL bulb while working with approximately the same energy efficiency. The LED bulbs should also turn on straight away without the warm up time that CFLs need. The EnduraLED can also be used with dimmer switches, something most CFLs cannot currently achieve.
The EnduraLED bulb marks a significant change to the way we light our homes. It offers an effective low energy equivalent to CFL lighting while avoiding the negatives of CFLs. The bulbs offer a way forward towards energy efficient lighting that can really be considered to be eco friendly.
