According to a MIT Technology Review, NASA has developed a system capable to grow huge amount of algae biofuel production.

Developers say this is a new fuel source which involves only wastewater and carbon dioxide. Algae Biofuel production is within a network of floating four nine-meter plastic bags fulfilled with wastewater and carbon dioxide.

In a demonstration plant in California researchers have shown this system can grow enough algae to produce almost 2,000 gallons of fuel per year under ideal condition.

The technology will require an enormous amount of plastic bags. According to estimation, to produce 2.4 million gallons of algae per year would require 5 square kilometers of plastic bags necessary to be replaced annually.
