Maxwell Technologies' UPS Based on Ultracapacitors for Short Term Energy StorageMaxwell Technologies Inc developed the uninterruptible power supply -UPS- module after consulting with UPS system integrators to mitigate the effects of brief power source disturbances on digital systems and sensitive medical and manufacturing equipment, and to provide bridge power to a generator or other long-term backup power source in the event of a complete power source outage.

A 56-volt ultracapacitor module addresses the short term ride through and bridge power requirements of UPS systems for critical installations as short energy storage. “Most of power disturbances last a second or less, so ultracapacitors provide an excellent technical solution and their projected 14-year life in a typical UPS installation makes for a compelling value proposition,” says Maxwell Senior VP Van Andrews.

Unlike batteries, which produce and have energy storage by means of a chemical reaction, Maxwell’s Boostcap ultracapacitors have energy storage in an electric field. This electrostatic energy storage mechanism lets ultracapacitors charge and discharge in fractions of a second and perform normally over a broad temperature range (-40 to +65C), operate reliably through one million or more charge-discharge cycles and resist shock, vibration, and overcharging.

A few key features and benefits of ultracapacitors for energy storage includes: maintenance-free operation and 14-year life ensure low cost of ownership, rugged construction meets IBC Zone 4 earthquake resistance standard, no heavy metals or toxic substances requiring special recycling, 3U and 4U rack-mount form factors for easy integration into standard equipment racks and available in 4, 5, 6.5, and 10-kW versions to easily configure for UPS system requirements and connectable for systems requiring up to 750 Voltage.
